Treatment

The story will start of with a boy running into his house. He is looking for help and looking distorted and scared as if someones chasing him. He runs around the house looking for someone that might be there, but he finds no help. As he starts runs up to the window we will get the first glimpse of the thing that is chasing this boy, however it will be just a silhouette so we won’t know for sure what is exactly chasing this boy. As he finds that there is nobody home he starts calling for help. As he is calling for help he hears doors opening and realizes that someone is in the house. He quickly runs to the shed in the garden and looks for a weapon to protect himself with. As the doors open he wakes up from this nightmare perfectly safe in a classroom.

Depth of field and Focus field

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Depth of field is about how much of the shot is in focus. It can be regulated by how close the camera is to the object or there is another option to change the depth of field which is aperture. The aperture is used to regulate the hole of the camera, which means if the aperture is lower the hole is bigger which means there is more shallow depth of field, however if you increase the aperture and make the hole smaller it will increase depth of field.

I did an practical task trying to experiment with different kind of apertures and even though it seems really minimal you can see the focus slowly going more wider from 5.6 till 36, however the reason that there is little to non blur and it is fully focused, because I took the images with the wide lens which no matter the aperture will create deeper depth of field.  So i will do this task again with a smaller lens and see if changing the aperture will impact the depth of field

However in the next task I had to have different objects in different distance and the difference is easily seen as especially in first shallow  depth of field picture where the person is holding the phone. It is very clear that the phone is the target of focus and the background is out of focus. I took this image in 5.6 aperture and in 80 shutter speed and it seems like there is a bit too much exposure as well. which could be the reason why the background isn’t more blurry.

The next mid depth of field i tried to recreate a subject walking towards camera and the main focus is on the object that is a bit further away. I took this photo in 11 aperture, however it seems like there is too much focused space. And the blur isn’t as noticeable as in the photo below. Because I had a wide lens which increased depth of field and it makes the image less blurry despite my aperture being at 11.

The wide depth of field shot was quite tricky as I had the subjects moving and one of them was moving his head too quick so it creates a little blur on his head. This shot was taken in 36 aperture and 20 shutter speed, but I think that it is over exposed as the clouds went by and the sun shined in. And the camera couldn’t react which made the image a bit too bright. However it still had the most of the image in focus which is what I tried to achieve.

Contextual Study

Three elements

Social

Personal – Broad and more intimate. Need to know what we worry about as a society? What is happening in the world? What today’s society standards?

Political

Wider world – Country in a depression, is it a time of change?  Is it time of safety? Who are we scared of? What are we scared of?

Chronological

Pacing in time in relation to media and technology. Expectation in genres and knowing how the time has changed it.

These three elements are used to do a contextual study by gathering research and analyzing it.

Broadchurch Case Study

If I was doing a contextual analysis on a TV show  ‘Broadchurch’, it would look something like this.

Social

The show was also made at perfect time, because according to ‘ibtimes’ website the most sexual crimes against children in UK was in 2012/2013 so that was a big issue people faced those years. This TV series took that concept and showed how those abuses actually happen as the offender was someone really close to the victim and nobody even suspected him. Whereas through entire show we saw people from the town chasing and accusing the outcasts.

Political

March 1st 2012 Euro zone unemployment reaches historical high of 10.7%. This statement could have been relevant in making a crime related TV series as the unemployment rate goes up, there are more likely to be crimes done in desperation of having no money. And as the town ‘Broadchurch’ was located near the beach its income probably was from tourists as we later in the show see that the owners of the pub and hotel were worried that there is not going to be any people visiting after this incident.

Chronological

Technology is quite insignificant, however the drone adds to the story

In first 10 minutes there was use of drone to fly over the cliff and showcase the beach and the height of it. Which can be used to show that the boy won’t survive the fall. In 2013 the drone technology was still new and people experimented with it little, however now it has become a staple equipment when filming a project as it getting to spot you want your camera to be easier and less time consuming.

Skins

skins

British television show ‘Skins’  follows the lives of group of teenagers in Bristol, England. The teenagers ages are around 16 – 18 as they go through two years of sixth form.

Research Plan

Social

This show seems to take the part in a lot of controversial subjects as drug use, sexuality, mental illnesses and teenage pregnancy. And what is expected society to teenagers at this time of age. In the show there are characters that come from different backgrounds and cultures, which impacts their life and is clearly shown in these series. Also what was the most popular among teenagers in 2007 and what was happening at that time.

Political

The first episode aired at January 25, 2007, which means I will have to research years 2006 and 2007 to see if there were any big political events that may be influenced into making this TV series.

Chronological

As it was shot in 2006 and 2007 there wasn’t the same kind of technology we had back then and instead of being on their smartphones all day, these teenagers have to come up with something else to entertain them.  There was also lack of social media and it wasn’t as popular as it was now. There  was also different fashion in 2007 compared to now as there was a lot more baggy clothing.

There was another similar genre of program called ‘Hollyoaks’, that followed the lives of a group of college kids where they dealt with these same problems and this could of been an inspiration for the ‘Skins’.

Contextual study

Social

This show showcases a lot of controversial topics that a lot of teenagers go through and these topics haven’t really been as popular discussed as it is now, so that’s probably one of the reasons this show got so popular in 2006. As it touched on topics like sexuality, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, mental illness and eating disorders. These are all topics that some teenagers and young adults go through and they weren’t much discussed in early 2000’s society. And the show could be relatable to some people as they might have struggled with something similar in their lives which brings in more audience. It also touches a topic of different cultures and its effect on people as there is an character with Muslim background.

The show also touched on the safety of buying drugs and not just using them as the character that bought the drugs were later on chased by the drug dealer as he wasn’t able to pay back the money he owed. And he wasn’t able to get help from police as he would get into trouble for buying the drugs in first place. Even if it is used in a comedic way it still can show that the people that make living on selling illegal products and services would have no trouble doing any harm to you. And this was highlighted as the character ‘Sid’ bought a lot of drugs, which he promised to pay for later on from a drug dealer that he didn’t know. It turned out that the drug dealer was actually mentally ill himself and wanted to do serious harm to Sid. It got to the point where the drug dealer had infiltrated as a substitute teacher and Sid had no escapes to save his life.

And drug abuse also can lead to you get in with the wrong crowd  and people that you don’t know, which can be seriously danger to your life. The episode that covered this the most was ‘Effy’ where she would engage with people she didn’t know anything about and abused a lot of drugs, which resulted her in almost getting raped and possibly die from drug overdose if it wasn’t for her older brother ‘Tony’ to save her and get her to hospital in time.

Overall I feel like ‘Skins’ covered a lot of these social aspects that weren’t as talked about in early 2000′ as it is now ten years later. Which is the main reason for the success of the show. As it touched on a lot of these controversial topics like drug abuse, sexuality and eating disorders by making some more dramatic by showing the consequences it can have. And some more comedic as their main target audience are the teenagers however the message is still there.

Political

The show doesn’t really focus on the political aspect as much as it does on the social. However there is one episode where the group goes to Russia and we experience different culture. The episode relied heavily on stereotypes about Russian culture such as thinking all Muslims are terrorist as when the group arrived in Russia the security immediately went for the only brown person in the group. Another stereotypes they used was that Russians always drink vodka to solve problems and have corruption as they are willing to accept bribes. These use of stereotypes made it more comedic and interesting to watch.(darlenebee, 2015) However getting to Russia seemed quite easy as anyone who wanted could go and there was no issuing on visas and such. Which is something you would need before entering a country outside Europe if you are living in UK.

So in conclusion the series were more focused on social aspect of teenagers life rather than political and it only used basic stereotypes. And i think it worked perfectly fine as it added a lot more comedic effect to series and applied for their target audiences which are other teenagers.

Chronological

The time this TV show showcases is exactly the time it was filmed as the technology and everything completely resembles mid 2000’s as there weren’t any smartphones or macs and teens had their flip phones which they mostly used for interacting with each other rather than how it is taking away the socializing in modern world.(Roche, J. 2008)

The show doesn’t use much of special effects and it feels like it is shot more realistically and than a film would.

And when if teenagers were to start watching the show now, they could not really relate as much as the teenagers that watched it ten years ago. Because there are a lot more use of technology at modern times among the teenagers, while in the series they had to entertain themselves.

The Game – Revisiting Framing and Composition

This task we were given was to try and re-shoot the scene from a TV series called ‘The Game’. In this scene the two characters are in small apartment discussing over operation ‘Glass’. This scene uses mainly mid shots with series of close ups to highlight the characters emotions when they are talking about this operation, which showcases how important and big this information is. They also used over shoulder shots to keep the character interaction between each other. Also there’s use of rule of thirds on the first character.

First scene we have a mid shot of the character, however the second character isn’t introduced yet. It also uses the rule of thirds. The lighting used was to have one side of character more dark while the other one is light up, This could suggest that there might be two sides to this character and he might be right between them.

Next scene we got established that this dialogue between these two characters is getting recorded, which gives away that this is a serious conversation and some secrets might get leaked.

We get a mid-long shot of the second character that is standing up. Which could interpret that he might be nervous about this meeting and isn’t quite sure about it. The lighting is used the same way it was with the first character.

Later we see the character trying to sit down while also the camera moved and showed us the exact location of the first character which is straight across the table. This shows us that the characters are in same room and they have gotten closer together.

In next scene there is use of over the shoulder technique to bring the tension between these characters as there are sitting closely across each other. The lighting still stays the same and there is still use of rule of thirds on first character.

While they are having their dialog the camera switches between over the shoulder shots of both characters to show what their main focus is at.

When the second character is about to reveal about the operation ‘Glass’ we get a zoom into his face to see his expression and it shows the audience where they should be focusing.

Next we get the same close up shot of the first character that just received this information and the focus on his face is to see his reaction to this information. It is clear that the character is more engaged and shocked when hearing about this operation which was managed by having a close up shot rather than filming his reaction mid shot.

In this scene after he has revealed about the operation ‘Glass’ the second character gets up as he might be reconsidering this decision of telling about the operation and he is getting further away from the first character. There is a bit camera movement as we see him moving up from eye level to low angle shot as he is standing.

Now the second character is shot from a low angle. As he is back up standing further away with the information about the operation, which gives him the upper hand in this conversation.

And right next we get a shot of a first character looking up to him, which implies that he is after something the second character has and wants to get it.

The Game – Revisiting Framing and Composition

Green Screen

Green screen is a technology used in studios to be able to change the environment of the place as you can put any kind of background on green screen. It is mostly used in weather forecasts as it helps the viewers see the visuals of the weather.

en_gb

For our practice I have decided to do a news parody where me and my classmate will act as weather and sports forecasters. We will find pictures to put behind us on a green screen and will try to re-enact the news forecasters. These two images will be the background I will be using as those are the only ones I found quite similar with no person in them.

The filming with green screen was quite easy  as I didn’t have any body parts out of the shot and there were no other backgrounds than green screen. And there was 3 rules lighting so I didn’t really have much shadow behind me so I could move my arms freely, however the lights were really warm so it would be hard to stand in front of them for longer periods of time.

While editing I came across two problems. First one was that there was a green outline which I fixed by changing the softness of outlines. The second problem I encountered was having my hair transparent when they moved close to the yellow logo on the second picture. To solve this issue I experimented with tolerance and saturations. In the end I found that I needed to add more tolerance to my shot and it solved this issue.
